Dating from around 1900, this elaborately carved set of shelves may have showcased a scholar’s prized collection of books, antiques and artist tools. The bookcase bears a colonial influence, translating the heavy and excessive decoration of British Victorian furniture into a refined example of Chinese design. Confined to the contours, the lively carving on the shelf aprons and three drawers enlivens the piece without overwhelming its open design. A later application of red lacquer highlights the piece with vivid color.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
