Unusual to Chinese furniture, a Greek key-like design, crisply rendered in walnut, outlines the doors of this exceptional cabinet. The motif, however rare, emphasizes symmetry, an important Chinese concept both symbolically and aesthetically. Capturing the simple and elegant spirit of Ming dynasty design, the early 19th-century cabinet emanates its uncomplicated character inside and out. Functioning as a scholar’s cabinet, it was likely commissioned for a specific room in a well-designed courtyard home.
