The followers of the cult of Amytaus, the Buddha of Eternal Life, believed that their devotion to this Buddha would prolong their lives. In this beautifully detailed Tibetan thangka painting the central figure of Amitayus is rendered in primarily a brilliant shade of red, shown cradling a jar filled with the elixir of immortality. This sacred thangka still retains its vibrant pigment colors, despite being painted over two hundred years ago.
