Collectors have said "Excavation" calls to mind the abstract expressionism of Robert Motherwell. Chicago based artist, Michael Thompson, calls his unique works "kites." Each is crafted from a split bamboo frame covered with stretched muslin and a collage of vintage Asian ephemera—including kimonos, obis, paintings, scrolls, drawings, and book pages collected on his travels. With "Excavation", he finished the work with abstract painting. Michael Thompson has been creating kites for more than a decade. His kites have been exhibited internationally.
