Displayed at festivals and ceremonies, this vibrant flag was created by the Fante people of Ghana to represent a particular military company. These groups, known as Asafo, can be found in villages and large towns, exercising political influence and enforcing codes of conduct within their communities. Great care was taken to create these badges of honor, which often illustrate Ghanaian proverbs or important symbolic figures that express the distinct character of the company. Made exclusively by men with nephews and sons serving as apprentices, flags are most often made of cotton and include decorative stitching, embroidery and applique. The small Union Jack-inspired emblem on this Asafo flag suggests it was made before Ghana gained its independence from England in 1957. We love the way the flag resonated with contemporary art through its brilliant color, graphic impact, and the delightful stylization of man and animals.
