Painted on polished pinewood, a pair of admiring birds perch on a cherry blossom branch. Cocking its head in a characteristically birdlike manner, the top bird gazes at its friend below it, symbolizing “double happiness.” Possibly created on the occasion of a marriage, the panel was painted in the port city of Canton (today called Guangzhou) in the early 20th century.
