Hand-carved of the highest quality jade, this 19th-century archer's ring was likely worn by a gentleman-scholar in Northern China. Traditionally, Chinese archers wore these rings to protect their thumbs while drawing a bowstring. Over time, these jade rings became fashion accessories and a decorative display of status. This stunning jade ring, hued a pale grey-green color with currents of light brown, has been recently lined with sterling silver by a contemporary artisan, adding a modern finish and narrowing the interior diameter to ring size 7.5.
