Created in the 1970s just as China was beginning its ascent as a global economic force, this pair of painted panels based on mythological tales seem to foretell the nation’s strength and power. Pictured in what is described as a “yellow mountain atmosphere” by the accompanying Chinese characters, lion and tiger pairs strike ferocious poses - crouching females ready to spring alongside males standing in commanding postures. Considered king of the wild beasts, tigers were associated with power, bravery, and any number of virtues. We love the way the high-keyed colors and bright red frames invest these beasts with magnificent vitality.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
