The Kuba people of Central Congo were famed for their distinctly geometric styles. While their royalty and religious figures would be detailed in fuller, more natural forms, the people represented themselves with defined angles and lines. The nose, brow, and ears of this mask represent this provincial style. Those features most likely mark this as a funerary mask that represented a beloved family member. The angular ears seen here represent the African aesthetic that informed modern western Cubism.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
