Foot Bath

The ancient Chinese compared the human body to a tree with the feet like roots. Daily washing of feet was a ritual for many, prescribed by traditional Chinese medicine to promote blood circulation and dispersal of negative energy. This foot bath from Heibei province dates from around 1910. Oval shaped to accommodate a pair of feet, the basin is made of pine planks carefully fitted together and bound with a braided cord. Beautifully burnished from time and use, the foot batch has charming legs carved to suggest animal feet or hooves. We see this basin as a place to stow towels or bath accessories, although it would also make a wonderful receptacle for magazines or knitting supplies.
