This monumental coffer was made in Shanxi province and exemplifies 19th-century Chinese furniture design: thoughtful proportions, select timbers, solid brass hardware and masterful mortise and tenon joinery. The flush panel doors were designed with extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the upper and lower frames. The dark lacquer finish has aged beautifully over time, revealing the pine timber beneath, lending great character to the original design. One hundred and fifty years ago, the chest might have served as a family's altar, where they paid respects to their ancestors. It would also have provided necessary storage, concealing everything from silks and embroidery to household tools.
