To the Kwere tribe of Tanzania, finely carved, darkwood staffs were used as status symbols. Healers, shamans, warriors, and, in this case, chieftains, would carry them to display their power. Here, a man sits proudly in a high-backed, figurative stool reserved for the chieftain. From the highly-detailed carving at the top to the gracefully tapered shaft ending in a finished point, this staff displays a proud history as an eye-catching sculptural object.
