High-backed stools were reserved for tribal chieftains. This particular example features a backrest carved in the likeness of its owner, further attaching his status to his unique seat. This was most important during the judicial and initiation ceremonies the chieftain would have overseen. It meant even when he wasn't present he was observing the occasion. The smoothly polished features seem to elongate and flow like liquid. This African aesthetic can be seen reflected in many European expressionistic paintings, like Munch's The Scream.
