Kurumba-Style Adone Antelope Mask

Dressed in a rustling raffia skirt, a dancer once performed in this elongated mask at a funeral ceremony held by the Kurumba people of Mali. Emulating the graceful form of an antelope, the mask brought forth the animal’s protective spirit to escort and aid the soul of the deceased. Masks were physical reminders of the achievements of ancestors and therefore great care and artistry went into their creation. The skilled artisan who carved this mask out of wood brilliantly captured the antelope’s alert gaze, textured fur, and attenuated horns. Paint, patterned metal finishes, and a necklace of dangling charms further animate the mask with regal bearings.
