Red Lacquer Snack Box

This elaborately decorated red lacquer box was once presented as a gift to an honored friend, filled with popular Chinese snacks such as roasted melon seeds, dried fruit, and soybeans toasted with cinnamon, fennel, and other spices. Made in China's Shanxi province during the Qing dynasty, the box was crafted by an artisan who clearly had an eye for detail. Bordered by an intricate honeycomb pattern, the top is adorned with an array of offerings and scholars' objects, including scrolls, books, peaches, censors emitting clouds of incense. The lid opens to reveal fifteen petite lacquered trays, each bearing the Chinese character for springtime on the underside.
