Once a part of a lacquered presentation box that may have been filled with roasted melon seeds, dried fruit, and other spiced snacks, this piece has been modified into a lightweight, decorative bowl. Golden paintings top layer upon layer of hand-applied black lacquer, depicting an auspicious scene of a bouquet of lotus flowers, symbols of purity and perfection. Possibly a gift for newlyweds, the box is also adorned with ripe pomegranates, symbolizing abundance, and a trail of peonies, an emblem of love and affection.
