Women in the Dogon tribe in Mali found economic independence through their skill with pottery. Everyday objects, like this water vessel, received detailed attention from these craftswomen. The vessel's varied textures come from its utilitarian design. The dimples and bands were engraved to give the drinker a better grip, creating rich, graphic handworn texture. Wear to the rim is expected from regular use over time.
