A modern artisan applied the vibrant copper and indigo imagery before firing, a process of under glazing that was developed during the Song dynasty. The finely painted symbols, fish, lotus pods, and underwater plants hold deeper meaning in Chinese art: may you be as harmonious as a fish swimming in water. Traditional Chinese homes featured large decorated ceramics as both decoration and talismans of prosperity.
