When we first saw these vases we assumed them to be traditional early 20th century porcelains. On further investigation we found them to be a pair of ceramic ginger jars that an inspired 19th-century soul tested their own methods on. They are painted with a "sang-de-boeuf" field and phoenix and peonies, combined offering a blessing of prosperity, peace and benevolence. The materials, techniques, and imagery are an absolutely unique folk art find in our 20 years of collecting.
