This turn-of-the-century Chinese snack box is an exquisite example of Qing-dynasty artistry. Using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, the box was constructed with eight sides, an auspicious number that brings prosperity and good fortune. The select burled veneer was chosen for its irregular grain - valued by artisans and collectors alike. The meandering parquetry trim was a time-intensive and sophisticated technique not widely practiced in China at the time, making this box a unique find. The lid lifts to reveal nine removable trays, originally filled with popular snacks to be presented with this precious box as a gift to an honored friend.
