Trimmed in rich rosewood, this hand mirrored glass tray has an ethereal look perfectly in line with its former use as an opium tray. Dating from the mid 19th century at the height of opium use in China, the tray was used to corral the exquisitely crafted accoutrements of smoking opium. Two of the corners are round and the other two square. This indicates that the tray once stood up in a frame for use when desired. The mirror has spoiled beautifully over time. As central to Chinese social life as tea and tobacco, opium was enjoyed with friends and had its own culture, customs, traditions and ephemera.
