Carved in the mid-19th century in China's Shanxi province, this fruitwood washing stick would have been used by a Qing-dynasty woman for washing clothes and textiles. Used to beat wet fabrics against a stone washboard, washing sticks were an integral part of Chinese daily life, evidenced by the stick's smooth, burnished surface. Mounted on a custom steel stand, this functional tool is elevated to a unique sculptural object with rich character and simple form.
