Graduated layers of ceramic roof tiles were a primary feature of Chinese architecture for centuries. Their resilience and simplicity made them an ideal answer to the region’s shifting climate. This particular tile would have capped the end of a line of simpler tiles, providing a drip channel to funnel rainwater off the roof and away from the home. Such end tiles are frequently decorated, in this case with relief carvings of bats, a traditional Chinese symbol of prosperity. Using a series of tiles decorated with bats to finish a roof provided its residents wishes for prosperity. Each tile varies slightly.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
