Plain wooden hitching posts have been used for centuries to secure horses. But during the Ming and Qing dynasties families showed off their wealth by displaying beautiful stone posts, like this, which is carved in the shape of a pumpkin. This post was carved over a century ago in China’s Shanxi province out of limestone that has beautiful wear, patina, and oxidation.
