This pair of courtyard panels with geometric lattice screens call to mind an aristocratic provincial Chinese home with neutral and balanced interiors. Generally, homes of the officials or people of status in 18th and 19th century China were lofty. As these panels are particularly tall, it is likely that they came from a family with notable status. Creating lattice was a geometric puzzle; this diamond pattern was made by the precise interlocking of long and short pieces of carved wood.
