This folk painting of a magpie perched on plum blossom branches would have been part of a bed enclosure in early 20th century Canton. There are four characters painted in the upper left corner that translate to "the magpie plays with the plum blossom." Auspicious magpies forecast good fortune and late-blooming plum blossoms herald spring and represent renewal, so the painting was rendered as a wish for good fortune to come.
