Scholars and leisure seekers descend on a classical Chinese garden meticulously gilt painted on two richly lacquered panels. Crafted circa 1800 during China’s Qing dynasty, the panels depict a lush setting studded with pavilions, meandering paths and a rocky landscape. Together, the panels progress from a raucous group partaking of the park’s diversions to a more serene garden-like setting in which horseback-riding scholars follow a river-banked path in a landscape studded with mystical mountains and trees.

Although depicting a traditional subject, the paintings experiment with perspective, a Western technique that was admired by Qing emperors.

Molded, integrated frames topped with brass filigree hangers anchor the panels.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
