This late 19th century red lacquer lattice window evokes life in a traditional Chinese courtyard home. Creating this geometric pattern was like putting a puzzle together; very different from making fretwork by carving or perforating a solid panel. Short pieces of straight wood were mortise and tenon-joined together with long pieces of carved wood to make this sophisticated pattern with abstract butterflies. Lattice is a gallery favorite for its incredible variety of uses. We've made tables, wall art, drop ceilings, and room dividers from this and similar pieces.
