The sleek design of this 19th-century three drawer coffer with an open shelf reflects the great tradition of classic Chinese furniture. Handcrafted of elmwood in China’s Henan province, the cabinet's impressive workmanship is evident in its balanced proportions, elegant brass hardware and elaborate apron finely carved with abstract dragons. As with larger cabinets, coffers like this were typically offered by a bride's family as dowry furniture to be used in the bedroom, providing both storage space and a long console table top surface.
