Its rich red, yellow and blue hues still incredibly vibrant, this example of an ancient, sacred Tibetan thangka painting depicts the Buddha of Compassion in a central mandala, surrounded by goddesses and attendants. Often commissioned for private patrons or Buddhist monasteries, thangka paintings were created by painters who studied with masters. They served as aids to meditation, as a form of prayer, or as tokens of thanksgiving for prayers that were answered. The painting is beautifully framed and mounted with a pair of silver knots.
