Marking the change of seasons from winter to spring, the blooming of cherry trees plays a tremendous role in Japanese art and culture. In spring 2009, photographer Doug Fogelson traveled to Japan to capture the springtime blooming of sakura, or Japanese cherry trees. Tracking the blooms from Tokyo to Yoshino Mountain to Kyoto, Fogelson captured every moment of the flowering process - from budding blooms to the final drop of petals. Panoramic in scope and featuring Fogelson’s multiple-exposure process, this image suggests traditional painted screens, creating a visual narrative that unfolds in a landscape of flowering trees. Assembled within a simple black frame, each limited-edition photograph is printed on Japanese washi paper.
