Provincial Roundback Chair

In ancient China people sat, slept, and ate on floor mats. Elevated seating began later and was often influenced by foreign furniture. These 19th-century chairs have a distinctively Chinese aesthetic: clean lines, slightly upturned arms, wider proportions, and the shou character (which means longevity) carved in the center. This provincial, roundback chair was carved out of willow in Northern China over 150 years ago.
