Provincial Chrysanthemum Chest

This 19th-century chest from China’s Shanxi province was crafted with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques and finished with several layers of dark lacquer. Its intricately paneled front opens with two doors hinged on wooden dowels built into the chest's frame, revealing two wide shelves for storage. The drawers are studded with boss nail heads and carved with multi-foiled profiles that surround brass pulls centered on chrysanthemum carvings, symbols of autumn and longevity. A cabinet of this configuration may have been part of a bride's dowry and was intended to store clothing and embroidered textiles.
