Rose medallion porcelain gained prominence in the mid-1800s to satisfy the huge demand for Chinese ceramics in Europe and the United States. The popular style includes panel scenes united by an exuberant rose floral motif. In this pair dating from 1900, the medallions depict a courtly gathering in lovely garden. Lavishly detailed and masterfully painted, the bowls demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship achieved by the Qing-dynasty ceramicists who used the rich and varied color of newly developed enamel glazes to their fullest advantage. Carved wooden bases provide a clean counterpoint to the bowls’ luxuriant decoration.
