This colorful painted panel was created by an artisan of the Igbo people of Nigeria. Crafted from a dense hardwood known as iroko, this panel likely served as the door into an obi, the male meeting house. The door is intricately carved with a signature pattern of V-shaped grooves, arranged in a variety of uli motifs referencing everyday Igbo life. Uli motifs have a prominent curvilinear quality and make use of negative space to contrast densely carved areas. At some point in this door's life it was painted with vibrant colors, and now lives on as an animated wall-mounted sculpture.
