Monumental Blue and White Phoenix Tail Vase with Lions and Pearls of Wisdom

This grande blue and white porcelain vase was painted by hand with mythical lions, representing protection, amidst clouds and pearls of wisdom. It is a called a phoenix tail vase due to the shape of the flair at the top. It is a perfect example of Chinese blue and white porcelains that inspired countless (often inferior) imitations throughout Asia and Europe. The blue cobalt oxide was actually introduced to China thousands of years ago by Islamic merchants, but Chinese potters refined the glazing techniques.
