On a cold winter’s night the kang, a heated brick platform, was the place to be. Placing mats and low tables on the kang, household members could remain warm and cozy while resting, reading or playing games. This kang table provided a welcome surface for reading matter or refreshments. Replicating the look of more formal furnishings, the table has an articulated waist, scroll legs with stretchers. Carved from walnut, a wood valued for its open grain and reddish-brown color, the table is as prized as today as it was in its time for its workmanship and practicality.
