Hand carved of milky white jade, this 19th century Archer's ring was likely once worn by a gentleman-scholar in northern China. Traditionally, Chinese archers wore these rings to protect their thumbs while drawing a bowstring. Over time, these jade rings became fashion accessories and a decorative display of status. The hand-carved design of a playful smiling face was likely a later addition by a subsequent owner. This stunning jade ring has been recently lined with sterling silver by a contemporary artisan, adding a modern finish and narrowing the interior diameter to ring size 6.5.
