Referencing the 16th-century Garden of Cultivation in Suzhou province, this chest’s painted panels depict an intimate interpretation of this inspirational site. The actual garden epitomizes traditional Ming-dynasty garden design with enlightened aesthetics that would have been enjoyed by the cultured scholars and "literati" of the time. Such gardens were celebrated as places for quiet contemplation or literary inspiration. This elm coffer is painted with miniature compositions of porcelain vases that were considered interior “gardens” as one might experience in a scholar’s studio. Wonderful as a sideboard or entryway piece, this spirited 19th-century chest retains the vitality of color of the original painted decoration - made even more striking against the backdrop of richly aged lacquer.
