Intricately crafted in the 19th century, this walnut kang chest showcases three doors inset with camphor panels, reminiscent of cartouche paintings. Often selected for its active grain and hardy nature, camphor wood was a popular choice during the Qing dynasty for making wardrobes or storage chests such as this one. Its low profile made it perfect for storage alongside a traditional kang platform in intimate spaces. The powerful backplated hardware is a hallmark of the port city of Tianjin, a favorite haunt of ours.
