Song-dynasty ceramic artists tamed the power of fire to create lasting designs of brilliant color by applying decoration before firing under carefully monitored conditions. Drawing upon this time-honored method of underglazing, contemporary artisans used deep indigo and vibrant copper to create this exquisite sea-themed jar. As an expression of harmony, the jar depicts an underwater wonderland of lotus pods and swaying plants, peacefully patrolled by a school of brilliant orange fish.
